There is a John BEME on the John & Sara List which most descendants believe is actually John BEAN, their ancestor. George Sawin Stewart also had a John BEAN on his list, he is #3 on The Dunbar Prisoners’ List. As of today I will be linking John BEME to this page and I will also continue to link the John BEAN on Stewart’s list to this page.

“The Lane Memorial Library in Hampton, NH has an excellent history and genealogy section with much online (http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/) that includes information on John Bean’s family. Also see the book by Bernie Bean “The Life and Family of John Bean of Exeter and his Cousins,” (Seattle Genealogical Society, Inc., 1970). John is my 7th gr-grandfather.”

About 10 years ago I found a book in the library at NEGHS called The MacBean Clan (I think that that was the name. It was something like that) It appeared to be a well researched book. It had the father of John MacBean the POW who was in Exeter NH (my 6th great grandfather) born in Strathdern, Invernes-Shire, Scotland about 1634 and the son of Donald MacBean. I live in Austin TX during the winter and will soon be going back to my small condo in Amesbury MA which is about 15 minutes from Exeter NH for the summer.”

24 Oct 1676: Paid for military service at Exeter, New Hampshire.

Of Exeter, paid £9,4,0 on 24 Oct 1676 for his military service (Soldiers in King Philip’s War, p449).

He lived at Exeter, N.H..  See Exeter History Minute.

A quick search for “John Bean 1620-1700” at www.americanancestors.org finds this :

Exeter, New Hampshire TRANSCRIPTIONS dated Aug 30, 1905:
Birth: John Bean 15 Aug 1661, son of John Bean
Death: John Bean 18 May 1666, son of John Bean
Birth: John Bean 13 Oct 1668, son of John Bean

Census: 1680 – John Bean- “Petitioners, New Hampshire Territory”

There are many more records of other John Beans for several generations. I never saw a MacBean just BEAN. ~ Teresa

Genealogists have told me John Bean (MacBayne) – grave marker at Congregational Church, Exeter, NH was my 9th great grandfather. Are there any DNA studies I can participate in to confirm? Thank you.

  3. George Bean says:

Thanks for your prompt reply. In Sept. 2014 my brother and I from Texas made a trip to NH where we visited with Barbara Rimkounis, who made the Exeter History Minute YouTube, in Exeter, NH. Our 6 th great grandfather David Bean, a descendant of John Bean of Exeter, built the Old Bean Tavern ( you can Google it) in Raymond, NH in 1750. It still exists today and is actually occupied by a wonderful couple Tim and Peg Louis. We were able to visit the Louis family on our trip and tour the old tavern. We were invited to participate in the city of Raymond’s 250 th celebration of the founding of Raymond. We also visited Bean Island (a geographic place – not an island) outside of Candia, NH and we visited David Bean’s gravesite at Candia. An unforgettable trip. Thanks again for the information. Please keep me informed on any updates. I will follow up on the DNA study.

  4. George Bean says:

Yes I read it last evening. Thank you.

  5. Have you communicated with Diane?

  6. Felix Bean says:

I wish I knew more about my “Beans” out of Bardstown, Kentucky. We can go back to Edward “John” Columbus Bean of Beantown, Maryland but don’t know about his father.

I do not have proof positive, because I don’t have anything on this John, but I believe the John Sinclair who married Elizabeth Bean was the son of John Sinclair the SPOW, who was in Exeter, NH.

John (Mac)Bean should be on the Worcester prisoner list, not the Dunbar list. He is listed on the John and Sara ship list as “John Beme.”
