First Generation in the New World

1.  ALEXANDER MAXCY*, was born presumably in Scotland about 1633 or 17 Dec 1638 and died at Wenham, Essex, Mass before 21 June 1684.  He married at Wenham in 1661, MARY ABBY*.  She was born at Salem, Essex, Massachusetts about 1641  and died at Wenham on 2 May 1721. She was the daughter of JOHN ABBY (1613-1690) and MARY LORING (1615-1672).

Biographical Notes:
Over the years I have asked any Maxcy I found to join our Maxwell group at FTDNA so we could compare results. So far I have not found a close (or even a distant) Y-DNA match between over 200 Maxwells and approximately 5 Maxcy lines. The Maxcy donors do tend to match each other.
I do now know the exact lineages (including those in the Lanni report) so I am asking for help to try to determine if there is some reason for this discrepancy in DNA testing (there could be several explanations) and the sources documented in Nancy Lannis genealogy report.
It would appear on the surface that Alexander Maxwell on the SPOW list and Alexander Maxcy may be different unrelated (at least genetically) men? Alternatively there could be “step brothers/ half brothers [thru a female line]” that would connect to the same male Maxwell/Maxcy etc.
Part of the dilemma is proving each generation in the various pedigrees back to the Alexander Maxwell/Maxcy.
Any suggestions and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Alexander Maxcy at age eleven, was captured at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650, kept at Newgate prison until Nov. 1650 at which time he came to the New World as a Scottish Prisoner of war aboard the “Unity”. He was one of four men sent to Wenham, Mass.  He became an English subject and was given land. He was indentured for a short time to Richard Kimball, who was the husband of his future wife’s sister. http://nancylanni.com/tag/alexander-maxie/

Some of the descendants kept the name Maxcy. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW IF ANY ‘MAXCY’ DNA WOULD TEST TO BE SAME AS ‘MAXWELL’.

*7280. Maxcy. J.W.M.H., Dec 30, 1918.

The ALEXANDER MAXCY, who settled at Attleboro was a native of Wenham., Mass., born probably about 1668, second son of ALEXANDER [1] and MARY MAXWELL, Alias “MAXY”, of that place.  The family name is variously spelt on the early records, Maxwell,, Maxsell, Maxell, Maxie, Maxey, Maxe, etc.  ALEXANDER [2] was a soldier in the Canada expedition of 1690, in Captain Samuel Gallup’s Company.  He married, at Topsfield, February 21, 1692-3, ABIGAIL MILES, of Salem, born there July 5, 1669, daughter of, Joseph and Exercise [Felton] Miles; children born at Wenham, viz: ABIGAIL, 1694; ALEXANDER, 1698; MARY, 1701; JOSEPH, 1703; ESTHER, 1706; JOSIAH, 1709; BENJAMIN, 1711;  The eldest daughter married Jacob Haskell of Gloucester, and possibly her parents resided there for a short time before their removal to Attleboro.

ALEXANDER [1] was born about 1633 [according to his own deposition], doubtless in Scotland, as his name and history indicate; in 1656 he was in the service of RICHARD KIMBALL, of Wenham, and then called ‘MAXY’; taxed at Wenham 1659, married about 1661, MARY UNKNOWN, whose family name is not found.  He died at Wenham before June 21, 1684, the date of his inventory.  Children born in Wenham: DAVID, 1662; MARY, 1664; MARGARET, 1666; ALEXANDER, [above], 1668; JOHN, 1670; SAMUEL, 1673; WILLIAM, 1675; SARAH, 1678; ELIZABETH, 1680; BENONI, 1682.  The third son, Samuel, was baptized at Beverly, “son of ALEXANDER MAXWELL, of Wenham”, but died before his father.

DAVID [2], the eldest son, is recorded as “MAXY” at birth, but “MAXWELL” at death; he died at Wenham, testate, February 7, 1754, aged 92.  GERSHAM [3], son of DAVID [2], settled at Wells, ME., and was the ancestor of a numerous race, all of whom spelt their surname MAXWELL, which beyond doubt is the proper form. MAXY seems to have been a familiar form or nickname, acquired by the immigrant during his apprenticeship and passed along in the Attleboro branch as MAXCY.

Alexander Brebner, an aged Scot, who died at Wenham in 1677, divided his apparel between Alexander Tomson, John Ross, Robert MacClaflin and Alexander “MAXY”.  Tomson and Ross were Scotch prisoners taken at Worcester in 1651, whose names appear in the passenger list of the John and Sarah, 1652.  MacClaflin [properly, MacLachlan] was ancestor of the New England Claflin family.  Brebner was taken at Dunbar in 1650, and had been a workman at the Lynn Iron Works.  It is probable that Maxwell and MacLachlan came over with him in 1650. G.S.S.

[note on page] There may have been other children, but these were the ones born in Wenham, MASS.  The name was originally Maxwell.  “Maxcy” was a nickname and carried on by the Attleboro group.  Parents of Mary Abby were John Abby b. 1613 and Mary Loring b. 1613.  Father of John was John Abbe b.1587 in West Hallon, England.
